St. Gertrude Cemetery and Mausoleum is proud to be recognized as a runner-up recipient of the 2021 American Cemetery Excellence award. Thousands of cemeteries and mausoleums around the globe were judged for this prestigious award.
In 1933, Saint Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia, New Jersey, formerly an 88-acre farm in Woodbridge Township, was transformed from agricultural acreage to “one of the most beautifully sectioned cemeteries of the east.
Today, four chapel mausoleums and four garden mausoleums provide over 20,000 resting spaces for the interred and create the ability to perform committals in four separate chapels simultaneously. The new state-of-the-art cemetery office provides comfortable amenities for visitors and funeral directors.
The cemetery and mausoleums are a beautiful, reflective, and peaceful destination for anyone interested in praying and visiting loved ones, connecting with their inner-self, and enjoying the natural beauty of St. Gertrude Cemetery.

The construction of the new Chapel Mausoleum of the Resurrection at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia is now complete and adorned with magnificent liturgical works of art created in Italy.
The new mausoleum, which opened on May 31, 2021, features elegant marble crypts, glass cremation niches, and a stained-glass dome over the Altar of the Chapel of the Resurrection inspired by the Holy Spirit.
Four life-sized, handcrafted wooden statues of the evangelists and the four creatures associated with each one have been installed at the niche banks situated in the front and rear of the new mausoleum.
A statue of St. Gertrude the Great, the namesake of the cemetery, has been installed next to the new state-of-the-art cemetery office.
In addition to the statue of St. Gertrude, there are several new artworks including a statue of Jesus being baptized by St. John the Baptist at the circle of the main entrance; a marble altar depicting bronze statues of Mary with the Twelve Apostles during Pentecost inside the new mausoleum; and the primary stained glass inside the Chapel of the Ascension within the new chapel mausoleum.
Finally, outside the Chapel Mausoleum of the Crucifixion, a new marble Rondanini Pietà statue of Mary holding Jesus after the crucifixion has been installed. This Rondanini Pietà was carved from the same marble quarry Michelangelo carved his original Pietà masterpiece from. This is one of only two Pietà statues like it in the world.
Besides providing a holy burial space in the Catholic tradition, the hope is that when visitors come to visit a loved one, attend a funeral, or simply pray at the Chapel Mausoleum of the Resurrection, they will experience an undeniable connection between themselves and our Lord Jesus Christ.
