MAHWAH — For nearly a century, the stained glass portrait of St. Patrick looked down on parishioners — as if from the heavens — from the massive nave of the Sacred Heart Church in Vailsburg, Newark.

But the Irish saint, as well as stained glass depictions of St. Ann, St. Cecelia, Moses and Isaiah, were recently brought down to earth and will now watch over visitors at a new home, the Maryrest Chapel Mausoleum in Mahwah.

The Holy Name Cemetery's new two-story mausoleum was dedicated Saturday during a Mass led by Roman Catholic Bishop John Flesey, who invoked memories of his father at the site's chapel.

"It was here at this cemetery where my father and I would walk around and visit his father and mother, which is why this is so special for me," Flesey said during the service at 823 West Side Ave.

What’s New at Catholic Cemeteries

Maryrest Cemetery in Mahwah, Bergen County, NJ has undergone extensive construction this past year.  We have constructed two (2) garden mausoleums, a new office building, a green burial section and many other features throughout the cemetery to better accommodate our Catholic faithful.  In addition, there is a soon to be completed chapel mausoleum, which is presently under construction.  One feature we are very proud of is the addition of two (2) cemetery gazebos.
