The Holy Name Cemetery's new two-story mausoleum was dedicated Saturday during a Mass led by Roman Catholic Bishop John Flesey, who invoked memories of his father at the site's chapel.
"It was here at this cemetery where my father and I would walk around and visit his father and mother, which is why this is so special for me," Flesey said during the service at 823 West Side Ave.
Members of Knights of Columbus also attended the nearly hour-and-a-half ceremony.
Archbishop of Newark John J. Meyers was scheduled to lead the Mass but couldn't attend because he is recovering from eye surgery, church officials said.
The mausoleum is part of the Holy Name of Jesus Chapel inside the cemetery.
The cemetery is the resting place of four former Jersey City mayors as well as several who had survived the sinking of the Titanic.
The most profound, challenging and enduring emotional experience we will ever encounter is, for most of us, the death of a loved one. Death shakes our foundations. Everything changes.
