'Green' burials offer eco-friendly options in New Jersey

GREEN BURIAL — An artist's rendering of the 'green' burial area at Maryrest Catholic Cemetery in Bergen County. It is the only cemetery with an option for an eco-friendly burial in Northern New Jersey.

SUMMIT — Headstones, vaults and mausoleums could become a thing of the past as more and more cemeteries are converted to green burial sites, letting nature play a role in the final step in life.8.27-2

“It seems like the natural thing to do,” Summit resident Ken Sheehan said of his decision for a green burial at Maryrest Catholic Cemetery in Bergen County. Currently, it’s the only cemetery with that option in Northern New Jersey. “There’s a calm and peaceful quality to being buried in a natural setting,” he said.
